Racing in Varies

Welcome to Varies! While we might not have a dedicated racetrack within city limits, Varies is perfectly positioned to enjoy a thriving motorsports scene thanks to the Colorado Region SCCA. You're in luck if you're interested in getting behind the wheel yourself, or just watching the action. Autocross is the most accessible type of racing in this area.

The Colorado Region SCCA holds autocross events frequently at various locations. It's the best way to dip your toes into motorsports. While not exactly "racing" wheel-to-wheel, autocross tests your driving skill against the clock through a tight, technical course marked by cones. It's a blast, and incredibly educational, allowing you to learn car control in a safe, controlled environment.

Choosing the Right Track

Since autocross is the primary activity in our immediate vicinity, the real question isn't *which* track, but *which* event and location. The specific location can vary each time. SCCA Colorado Region is usually at the Driving Experience location.

To decide what's right for you, consider these factors:

* Experience Level: Autocross is fantastic for all levels. Beginners are always welcome, and experienced drivers can compete at a high level. * Car Type: Autocross is open to nearly all types of cars, from daily drivers to purpose-built race cars. Check the SCCA rules for specific classing guidelines, but generally, if it's street legal, it can probably run. * Location/Date: Since the autocross locations change, prioritize events that are convenient to you based on their date and location. Check the Colorado Region SCCA website for the most up-to-date schedule.

Planning Your Visit

Planning your autocross experience is key to having a good time. Here's what you need to know:

* Registration: Pre-registration is strongly recommended for autocross. This helps the organizers plan effectively. Look for the upcoming events on the Colorado Region SCCA website and sign up in advance. * Vehicle Preparation: Make sure your car is in good working order. Check your tire pressures, fluid levels, and brakes. You'll need to pass a safety inspection before you can run. Consider removing loose items from your car's interior. * Required Gear: You'll need a Snell-approved helmet. The organizers usually have some loaner helmets available, but it's always best to bring your own if you have one. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory. * What to Bring: Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat, especially during the warmer months. A folding chair can also be helpful for relaxing between runs. Snacks are good too! * Spectating: While autocross is more about participation, spectators are usually welcome. Check with the organizers beforehand, but it's generally free to watch. * Arrive Early: Arrive at the location at least an hour before the scheduled start time to give yourself plenty of time to register, get your car inspected, and walk the course. Walking the course is CRITICAL. * Volunteer: Autocross events are run by volunteers. Consider offering your help during the day. You'll learn a lot and meet some great people.
